01 / Drywall partitioning

More than board
on a frame.

Drywall partitioning is a lightweight way to divide internal space using a frame lined with gypsum plasterboard. The partitions discussed here are non-load-bearing: they create rooms rather than support the building above.

A typical drywalling system uses galvanised steel studs and tracks, boards on both sides, and cavity insulation where specified. Plan doors, services and the final finish alongside these materials so each component suits the intended construction.

  1. 1

    Plasterboard linings

The board type, thickness and layers must match the specified drywall partitioning system.

  2. 2

    Steel studs & tracks

Choose drywalling studs and tracks to suit the wall height, openings and required performance.

  3. 3

    Cavity insulation

Suitable insulation fits between the studs and forms part of the acoustic or thermal design.

  4. 4

    Joints, edges & connections

Compatible jointing, perimeter seals and service details complete the drywalling system.

02 / Start with the room

Drywalling for
the way you live.

Choose drywall partitioning to suit the room: a storeroom, bedroom and confidential meeting room can need very different constructions.

Everyday interiors

General room divisions

For drywall partitioning in passages, dressing rooms and storerooms, begin with the wall height, openings and intended use.

Plan early: door positions, services and the desired finish.

Privacy & comfort

Bedrooms & offices

For bedroom and office drywalling, discuss acoustic expectations before choosing boards and insulation. Speech privacy depends on the entire separation between rooms.

Plan early: cavity fill, board layers, doors and ceiling connections.

Humidity & wet areas

Moisture considerations

Moisture-resistant boards can form part of a specified drywalling system. Direct water exposure and tiled wet areas require their own detailing.

Plan early: the exposure, board specification and waterproofing requirements.

Specified performance

Fire-rated partitions

Fire-rated drywall partitioning requires an identified, tested construction. Boards, framing, insulation and service penetrations must match that system.

Plan early: the required rating and complete manufacturer specification.

High walls or heavy fixtures?

Tell your drywalling installer about tall partitions, large doors, televisions, cupboards and shelving before boarding begins. Stud size, steel gauge, spacing and reinforcement need to suit the job; the same frame will not suit every application.

03 / Build your material enquiry

Drywalling materials,
chosen together.

Start with your drywall partitioning specification. Then confirm the exact products, thicknesses, quantities and supply options before ordering.

Our 3000mm regular gypsum board listing is a starting point for drywall partitioning that specifies this product. Confirm its suitability for the complete wall construction before ordering.

Check the whole specification. A matching thickness does not make different board types interchangeable in a tested system.

ISOVER

Cavitybatt & Cavitylite

Glasswool products developed for framed construction and drywall partitioning cavities. Discuss batts or cavity rolls according to the wall layout and specified insulation.

Thickness options to discuss: 63mm and 102mm. Isover lists the thicker option as 102mm; match it to the actual cavity and system.

KNAUF INSULATION

Knauf Acoustic Roll

Glass mineral wool designed for internal wall and floor applications. For suitable drywalling systems, it provides sound absorption within the partition cavity.

Thickness options to discuss: 63mm and 100mm. Request Acoustic Roll by name so it is distinguished from the general ceiling roll range.

Gyproc RhinoBoard

Part of our planned range.

RhinoBoard is a Gyproc plasterboard brand, with standard and specialist board options. We are preparing to add RhinoBoard to our range. If your project specifies it, ask us to confirm the exact product and availability before ordering. Standard RhinoBoard, FireStop and MoistureResistant boards serve different specifications.

Studs, tracks & fixings

Include the specified steel section, gauge, track, anchors and screws in your drywalling enquiry. The framing schedule must allow for wall height, openings and connections.

Tape, compounds & trims

A drywall partitioning material schedule should include compatible joint tape, jointing compound, corner treatments, perimeter details and any specified skim finish.

Higher density insulation

If Energylite or another specialist product is specified, send the density, thickness and system reference. Higher density alone does not guarantee better sound isolation.

Ask us to confirm availability of framing, specialist boards and finishing accessories. For a tested wall, specify every component by its approved product name.

04 / Plan acoustic privacy

A quieter room takes
more than insulation.

In drywall partitioning, cavity insulation absorbs sound energy inside the wall. The amount of sound passing between rooms depends on the combined construction and its connections.

A roll’s sound-absorption figure is not the wall’s sound-reduction rating. For acoustic drywalling, work from a tested wall system and consider the building around it.

Compare acoustic insulation options
01

Boards, framing & cavity fill

Board mass, layers, stud arrangement and insulation work together. Fit the specified insulation without avoidable gaps or forcing an oversized product into a shallow cavity.

02

The routes around the wall

Sound can travel through adjoining construction or over a partition via a ceiling void. Plan the head of the wall and surrounding connections, especially for private offices and boardrooms.

03

Doors, sockets & service openings

Door gaps, glazing and poorly detailed penetrations can undermine acoustic drywalling. Coordinate electrical boxes, services and seals before the cavity is closed.

05 / Compare the options

Drywall partitioning prices in Cape Town.

Drywalling prices per square metre vary with the specification. A basic divider and a specified acoustic or fire-rated partition have different material and labour requirements.

For drywall partitioning quotes, ask whether the rate measures one face, both boarded faces or a complete installed wall. Compare inclusions on the same basis.

Ask your quotation to identify

  • Wall lengths and full height
  • Stud, track and framing specification
  • Board type, thickness and layers
  • Cavity insulation product and thickness
  • Doors, glazing and reinforcement
  • Acoustic or fire requirements
  • Jointing, skimming and painting scope
  • Delivery, access, installation and VAT

06 / A useful starting point

Plan the areas.
Prepare your enquiry.

Estimate your drywalling areas by entering the total length of walls that share the same height. The planner separates partition area from board lining on both sides and insulation within one cavity.

  1. Measure wall length and height in metres. Run separate calculations for walls with different heights.
  2. Enter the combined door and window opening area once, measured on one face of the wall.
  3. Choose the board layers already specified for each side and an initial material allowance.
  4. Review the areas and send your project details for a checked quotation.
No measurements yet?

You can still ask for help. Send a few photographs, your location and what you want the partition to achieve.

This is an area estimate, not a board cutting schedule, structural design or installed price. Door reveals, returns and additional surfaces need separate measurement. Board quantities, pack rounding and framing must be checked for the final layout.

From the plan to the finish

Plan your drywalling
before the wall is closed.

A clear drywall partitioning schedule helps the installer, other trades and the customer agree on what is included.

01 / Plan & specify

Agree on the wall.

Confirm the drywalling layout, height, room use, performance requirements and finish. Identify any system reference in the specification.

02 / Frame & coordinate

Plan the hidden details.

Set out doors, services and reinforcement within the drywall partitioning frame. Confirm fixing provisions for heavy items before the boards go on.

03 / Insulate & board

Follow the build-up.

Install the specified cavity insulation, board layers and connection details, with services and openings properly coordinated.

04 / Joint & decorate

Agree on the finish.

Complete the required joint treatment and trims. Allow the specified drying and preparation before painting or decoration.

Drywall partitioning questions

Before you order
or start building.

Use these answers to prepare your enquiry. Where drawings specify a particular wall system, that specification remains the starting point.

Ask about your project
Which plasterboard thickness should I use for drywalling?

12.5mm plasterboard is used in many drywall partitioning systems, but thickness alone is not a specification. Confirm the product, frame, layers, wall height and intended use. Thin ceiling boards should not be substituted into a partition simply because they cost less.

Is RhinoBoard the same as gypsum board?

RhinoBoard is Gyproc’s plasterboard brand. Gypsum board is the broader material description. Different brands and specialist board types have different specifications; use the exact product required by a tested or specified wall system.

Does cavity insulation make a wall soundproof?

No. It provides sound absorption within the cavity, but privacy depends on the complete partition, doors, openings and surrounding construction. Discuss the required acoustic result before the system is chosen.

Can I use ordinary ceiling insulation inside drywall?

Only where the particular product is suitable for the cavity and permitted by the wall specification. Purpose-designed products such as Cavitybatt, Cavitylite and Knauf Acoustic Roll provide clear options to discuss. Check thickness, fit and the system requirements.

Can drywalling be used in a bathroom?

A suitable system can be used in appropriate locations. Moisture-resistant plasterboard is not a substitute for a complete wet-area design. Confirm the board, exposure, waterproofing and tile support details, particularly around showers and direct water contact.

Does FireStop board automatically provide a fire rating?

No. The required resistance applies to the specified complete assembly, including framing, board layers, joints, openings and penetrations. Use the relevant manufacturer-tested system and its installation details.

Can cupboards, shelves or a television be fitted?

Suitable fixings and support can be planned for the load. Provide the position and weight of heavy items before boarding so the installer can include the required reinforcement or fixing provisions.

Is drywalling always cheaper than brickwork?

No. Compare the completed work: materials, labour, access, services, openings and decoration. A high-performance drywall system can cost more than a basic wall. Check that competing quotations describe the same requirements and measurement basis.

How long does drywall partitioning installation take?

It depends on the area, wall height, openings, site access, services and finish. Jointing and decoration also need appropriate drying time. Ask for a programme based on your actual project.
